A restraining order was imposed on Kokrajhar on Sunday citing fears of law and order breach, making it the seventh district in Assam to be subject to such restrictions within a week, political parties and others said. An official order said that the Additional District Magistrate had imposed restraining orders on Kokrajhar under Section 144 of the CRPC in view of the urgency of maintaining law and order in the district.
The order said that the law and order situation was likely to deteriorate due to the activities of anti-social elements and agitation programs of political parties, student unions and other organizations.
Gathering of five or more people in any public place in the district, holding processions, chanting slogans, holding rallies and holding festivals without permission is currently banned, as well as double riding of arms. There is also a ban.
Earlier, restraining orders were imposed in Charaideo, Sonitpur, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Kamrup districts to check any law and order situation.
The ban was imposed on June 12 in Cachar and Karimganj after violent protests in various parts of the country over controversial remarks against the Prophet of Islam by two former BJP leaders.
The other three districts were also brought under restraining orders last week.
