Guwahati: Assam: Section 144 enforced in Cachar and Karimganj districts, ban on rallies A restraining order has been issued under Section 144 of the CRPC in Cachar and Karimgamj districts of Assam and all processions and rallies have been banned in both the districts, an official said.

The Catcher district administration on Sunday imposed various restrictions under section 144 of the CRPC, while neighbor Karim Ganj issued a similar order on Friday.

In issuing the order, Additional District Magistrate of Cachar , Deepak Jidong, noted that “large-scale rallies and protests have been taking place in different parts of the district for the last few days, including large gatherings”.

He further said that some people may get involved in anti-social activities and intimidate the real people, which may upset them. “There are fears that this could lead to a breach of public order,” the ADM said.

Gatherings of five or more people were banned in the district under the Prohibition Order, firearms were not allowed to be carried, all rallies and processions were stopped without special permission, and microphones were allowed without permission. Or use of loudspeakers is not allowed.

Karimganj Additional District Magistrate Rantu Chandra Boro has banned all processions, rallies, sit-ins, distribution of pamphlets, banners and posters which could disturb public peace and tranquility.

He also said that “in view of the evolving situation on the front lines of law and order following the controversial statement of one of the leaders, there have been protests in many places across the country.”
