Over Speeding truck
KAZIRANGA: A speeding truck hit a rhino in Kaziranga National Park along National Highway 37 in Assam.
The rhinoceros was seen hitting a truck after suddenly coming onto the highway.
After being hit by the truck, however, the rhino survived and managed to get up and go back into the forest.
Reacting to the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government “will not allow their space to be violated”.
“Rhinoceros are our special friends. We will not allow any encroachment on their habitat,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The incident took place in Haldibariin, Assam, where the speed limit for vehicles is 40 kmph.
However, the truck was traveling at a speed of more than 50 kmph, Assam Forest Department officials said.
The truck was later stopped and its driver fined.
The Assam Chief Minister said: “The rhino survived the unfortunate incident at Haldibari. The vehicle was stopped and fined.”
Sarma added that the Assam government is working on the construction of an elevated corridor in Kaziranga.
“Meanwhile in Kazaranga we are working on a special 32 km elevated corridor as part of our commitment to save animals,” the Assam chief minister said.
An elevated corridor will be constructed from Jakhla Bandha in Assam to Bokakhat for wildlife conservation in Kaziranga National Park.
