Shillong: The Meghalaya government will press the central government for allocation of Assam-Meghalaya cadre for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers.
This was said by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday.
“I have written to the home ministry several times. I have also mentioned it to the prime minister and he has informed me that he is looking into the matter,” said Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma.
The Meghalaya chief minister added: “However, we have not been able to complete it yet.”
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma added that the Meghalaya government “will continue to put pressure on the Government of India”.
“It is in the larger and long-term interest of both the states that we have our separate cadres,” Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said.
However, according to reports, the Union Home Ministry is not in favor of creating a separate cadre for the state of Meghalaya.
Reports claim that the Center is unlikely to accede to the demand for bifurcation of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre as the number of officers for Meghalaya is low, which may not be sustainable to maintain a separate cadre.
