Dibrugarh: In the latest development in the Dibrugarh University ragging case where a student was critically injured after jumping from the second floor of the hostel, prime accused Rahul Chhetri surrendered before the police on Monday, a senior official said. told.

Confirming the development, Raju Bahadur Chetri, officer-in-charge of Dibrugarh police station, said, “Continuous pressure by us forced Rahul Chetri to surrender before the police. He surrendered before the Lekhapani police in Tinsukia district early this morning and A team of Dibrugarh police has taken him into custody for questioning.
Chatery has been booked under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 341 (wrongful restraint), 307 (incitement to suicide) and 143 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC.
“So far seven students have been arrested in this case, including Chatery,” he added.
OC Chatery said, “Police is investigating the case on top priority and other persons involved in the ragging case have been identified. We expect more arrests very soon.
Four students of Dibrugarh University were suspended for three years, while 18 others were expelled for their alleged involvement in the case.
Dibrugarh University Ragging, Three wardens of ‘Padmanath Gohain Baroha Chaturniwas’ (PNGBCN Hostel) were also suspended by the university authorities for dereliction of duty.
Sarma, who was admitted to the ICU, suffered a vertebral fracture that caused severe nerve damage, leading to weakness in one leg. He also suffered a fracture in his hand. Doctors said that he underwent surgery on December 1 and is now on the road to recovery.
Registrar Parmanand Sonowal said the University’s Anti-Ragging Committee (ARC) has applied to the CJM Court for permission to record the statements of the arrested persons.
“Law officer of Dibrugarh University Devaraj Sharma and Inspector of Colleges and ARC member Rupam Saikia have been sought permission to go to the jail and record their statements,” he added.
A magisterial inquiry is being conducted by Additional Deputy Commissioner Singhmitra Broha.
