Guwahati: Following recent reports of jihadi activities in parts of Assam, locals in Goalpara district reportedly demolished a madrassa in protest against such activities.
It should be noted that with this, the number of madrasas demolished in Assam has increased to four since August. Three were earlier demolished by the government citing various laws.
According to reports, local people also demolished a house next to it.
This action was carried out by local people in Pakhiura Char.
There were reports of some jihadi activities operating in the said area and this was a link to the two fugitive Bangladeshi nationals.
It may be noted that the police had recently arrested a person named Jalaluddin Shaikh from the madrassa and found that he was involved in anti-national activities and was the maulvi of the madrassa.
Two other madrasah teachers were also included with the arrested person.
While the local people demolished the madrassa, the government did not intervene. Locals were said to have taken this step because they were shocked to learn that the teacher/imam was a “jihadi”.
Locals demolished the structure to send a message that they have no support for such activities.
