Assam: Legal Meteorology Controller caught red handed taking bribe.A team of Assam Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption has arrested the Comptroller of Legal Meteorology, Assam, Sachindra Nath Baishya after he was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a complainant.
Official sources said the Vigilance Directorate had received a complaint alleging that Baishya had demanded a bribe of Rs 25,000 from the complainant for issuing a license and wanted to open a shop to sell weighing and measuring instruments.
“Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Directorate to take necessary legal action against the official. On the same occasion, a team from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption visited the office of the Controller of Legal Meteorology at 4.40 pm (Friday). I set a trap after which the prostitute was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant, “said a statement issued here.
Bribe money was recovered from the possession of the accused government employee in the presence of independent witnesses. According to him, the team has arrested him.

Upon further search, the Trap team also recovered an additional Rs. 3,23,850 from his office chamber.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) registered a case against the prostitute under Section 7 (a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 (as amended in 2018) under ACB Police Station Case No. 16/2022. The necessary legal action is being taken, “the statement said.

Recently, vigilance teams have cracked down on corrupt government employees and arrested many government officials in bribery cases.
On May 24, Darrang, a senior official of the District Industries and Commerce Center (DICC), was caught red-handed taking bribe from the complainant.

Earlier, a food safety officer was caught taking bribes after a trap was set in the office of the director of health services in Nagaon.
In February, a tax superintendent stationed in Morigaon, along with a close associate, was arrested in a bribery case.

In the same month, a senior assistant of the Assam Agriculture Department was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 15,000 from the complainant.
