Assam: Jihadi case likely to be handed over to NIA

GUWAHATI: Jihadi cases in Assam, whose modules were recently busted by the state police, are likely to be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

This was stated by the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Notably, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has advised the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta to hand over the cases to the Jehadi Terrorism Module after a preliminary investigation.
The Morigaon case has already been handed over to the NIA. I have asked the DGP to hand over the cases after preliminary investigation,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
On the night of August 25, police in Assam’s Golpara district arrested another person with jihadi links from Bongaigaon district.

The arrested person has been identified as Hafeezur Rahman Mufti.
“Hafizur Rehman Mufti has links with AQIS/ABT (Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent/Ansarullah Bangla Team),” said Assam’s Goalpara district SP – VV Rakesh Reddy.

Meanwhile, Assam DGP – Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has said that some anti-radicalisation measures have been initiated to deal with the growing network of jihadists in the state.

The DGP of Assam added that several Muslim groups have also been taken into confidence, who in turn have promised support in cracking down on jihadist elements in the state.
“We have started implementing anti-radicalisation measures in the state. We are also in talks with several Muslim groups on the issue, who have pledged their support,” Assam DGP Bhaskar. Jyoti Mahanta said.

He further said that some unscrupulous elements are taking advantage of madrassas spreading in Assam.
“Some people are taking advantage of the madrassas spread across Assam,” Mahanta said.

The Assam DGP further said that the “entire conspiracy” to create trouble and chaos in the state is being hatched outside Assam.

“The whole conspiracy is being hatched outside Assam, especially in Bangladesh. And, a few Al-Qaeda affiliates are influencing and radicalizing people here,” the Assam DGP added.
