Assam: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani has been remanded in police custody for three days.
Guwahati: A local court in Kokrajhar , Assam on Thursday remanded arrested Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani in police custody for three days.
Mevani was arrested by Assam police from Palanpur in Gujarat on Wednesday night and taken to Ahmedabad, from where he was taken to Assam this morning.
Assam Police arrested Mevani on the basis of a complaint lodged by KokrajharBJP leader Arup Kumar Dey over the now-deleted tweets on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The court of Kokrajhar Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) rejected the bail plea of the Dalit leader and remanded him in police custody for three days.
A lawyer for the MLA said that the police had sought 14 days custody of Mevani but the CJM court granted him only 3 days on the condition that the MLA be transferred out of Kokrajhar during the remand period. Will not be
Sources said that Mevani would file a bail application in the Guwahati High Court on Monday.
Assam Police has filed a number of charges including criminal conspiracy, incitement to enmity between communities, deliberate insult with intent to incite breach of peace and provisions of the Information Technology Act.
