Assam govt to shutdown 1000 private madrassas, CM Sarma said

Guwahati: Around 1000 private madrassas in Assam will be closed soon.This was stated by the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma.
CM Sarma said that the Assam government is trying to negotiate with private madrasas to close them and convert them into normal schools.
“Private madrasas are protected by the Constitution of India. The government cannot touch religious educational institutions run by minorities.

However, the Assam Police and the Education Department are trying to close down around 1,000 private madrassas.”

The Assam CM added: “We are in negotiations with private madrassa bodies.”

It may be mentioned here that the Assam government has already closed all government-run madrassas in the state and converted them to general schools.

Meanwhile, speaking on the census of Muslim community in Assam, the chief minister said that all the five Assamese Muslim communities in the state have approved the census.

The Assam Chief Minister also added that his government will complete a fresh census of Assamese Muslims by the end of this year.

Significantly, Mr Sarma said that at least two more districts of Assam will see a rollback of AFSPA this year.

“By 2024 end, we will complete the census,” said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
