Assam government declared 'Kaji Nemu' as state fruit

Guwahati: The state of Assam has decided to make ‘Kaji Nemu’, also known as sour lemon, as the state fruit of Assam.
Taking to the social media handle X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Our government has decided to declare Kaji Nemu (citrus lemon) as the state fruit of Assam. With its unique fragrance and antioxidant properties, Assam citrus has enriched our local cuisine. With today’s announcement, it is poised to shine on the global fruit map, boosting self-reliance and productivity.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora announced that ‘Kaji Nemu’ has been recognized as the state fruit of Assam.
On the seventh day of the budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Bora said that the state cabinet has decided to declare lemon as the state fruit.

Recently in November 2023, the Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing, Assam, launched a specialised trade promotion programme of Kaji Nemu across four prominent metro cities in India, namely Delhi NCR, Pune, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

The initiative engaged 40 marketing experts in Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune covering 100 key locations.

The dedicated Kaji Nemu trade promotion programme has extended its reach to Bengaluru, encompassing various strategic locations.
