Assam: Garos demand separate autonomous council.
Goalpara: United Garo Autonomous Council Movement Committee (UGACMC) has demanded formation of Garo Autonomous Council in Assam.
The formation of a separate Garo Autonomous Council in Assam has been a long-standing demand of the more than 7 lakh Garos of Assam.
The UGACMC has requested Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene in the matter.
The organization has written a letter to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanding the formation of a Garo Autonomous Council.
UGACMC Chairman Phyllis Sangma in his letter to the Assam Chief Minister said that the Garos should have their own autonomous council in Assam.
The organization added that the formation of Garo Autonomous Council is necessary to shape our destiny in terms of political, social, cultural race, education etc.
“Therefore, for the all-round development of the region, it is necessary for the Assam government to take cognizance of the matter and recognize the rights of the Garos and take necessary steps to upgrade the Garo Development Council to the Garo Autonomous Council. Therefore, I request your honor to act on our strong demand for the larger interest of the Garo people,” Follens Sangma said in the memorandum.
