Assam floods: Silchar remains underwater, toll rises to 108

The flood situation in Assam was critical on Friday with 45.34 lakh people affected by the floods, officials said.

He said that along with Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, their tributaries are also rising fast, and even flood waters have started receding from some areas.
He added that the number had risen to 108 with seven deaths in the last 24 hours.

A district official said the situation in Silchar, considered a “gateway to Bark Valley”, was “critical” and most areas were still under water.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said it had stepped up rescue and relief operations by deploying additional resources in the worst-affected districts. Officials said that eight NDRF teams with 207 personnel were brought from Ita Nagar and Bhubaneswar, while an army team with 120 members was sent from Dimapur with nine boats for operations in Silchar.

The state government has started a helpline for the situation in the district – 0361-2237219, 9401044617, and 1079.

 

He said that food parcels, water bottles, and other fundamental things were being dropped from the aviation-based armed forces helicopters.
