Diphu (Assam): Five wild chimpanzees have been rescued from a vehicle and two suspected smugglers have been arrested in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, police said on Wednesday.

During a routine check, police on Tuesday night stopped a vehicle in the Dalai Lama area near the Assam-Nagaland border and found animals inside.

Police rescued five chimpanzees and handed them over to Forest Department officials in the district’s Manja Range on Wednesday.

Two occupants of the vehicle were arrested.

During the interrogation, both of them said that they belong to Thoubal district of Manipur.
