North LAKHIMPUR: A fire broke out at the 2000 MW NHPC Subanseri Lower Hydroelectric Project at Girukamakh along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Sunday.

Sources said that the property of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Ltd was badly damaged due to the fire at the Subansiri dam site.
Sources added that smoke was seen rising from Station No. 1 of the near-completed hydropower plant, causing panic among people outside.

Two mega generators inside the station were also damaged in the fire, an official said.
Firefighters from NHPC finally brought the fire under control. There was no casualty in the fire incident.

Earlier on October 28, a massive landslide occurred at NHPC’s near-completed plant at Gerukamukh in Assam.
On October 12, a similar landslide affected the NHPC plant forcing the evacuation of workers.

NHPC has postponed the operation of the plant twice in the last one year due to natural calamities like landslides.

It may be noted that the mega dam project on Subansiri river at Girukamakh on the Assam-Arunachal border was originally scheduled to start in August 2022.On June 14 this year, Union Power Minister Rajkumar Singh, while visiting Girukamukh in Assam, said that the construction of SLHEP is almost complete and will be commissioned next year.
