Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 10 September lashed out at the Congress party, accusing its members of adopting the “Gandhi” surname merely for political gain.
Sarma asserted, “Whenever an election comes around, the Congress starts a ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ (Unite India Rally). But once the Karnataka elections are over, they have increasingly called themselves ‘India’. They declared, ‘Now we are India,’ as if he represented the entire nation.
I reminded them that they are fake leaders. First, Mahatma Gandhi won India’s independence, and then you adopted the surname ‘Gandhi’, turning yourself into duplicate Gandhis.”
He continued, “The first scam in India was the ‘title’ scam… They want to control the identity of the entire nation. Tomorrow if a criminal takes the surname Gandhi, does he become a saint?”
By adopting the name ‘India’, you have committed a sin because you have done nothing to add to the glory of the nation… You have no right to claim the name ‘India’, let alone ‘Bharat’.
In a parting message, Sarma humbly appealed, “I have a simple request: At the very least, Rahul Gandhi should consider giving up the ‘Gandhi’ surname. Even that is a duplicate title. “
