Assam BJP wants GMC polls postponed due to Rongali Bihu celebrations

Guwahati: The BJP has submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commission, Assam, seeking postponement of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections on April 19 as this week during the long Rongali Bihu celebrations. Is fixed

 

A BJP delegation led by Secretary General of State Pulak Gohain and Diplu Ranjan Sarma presented the memorandum to the SEC on Thursday, pointing out that Beho celebrations and election campaigns would be held in most parts of the city and It will be difficult to run.

The decision to postpone the polls was taken after consultations with several Guwahati leaders who pointed out that holding the elections on time would be a source of great frustration to those who, two years later, all over Assam are going to celebrate important festivals  global pandemic.

 

Rongali Bihu celebrations in the state will start from April 14.

 

The notification of election of 60 wards of GMC was issued on Wednesday and the Model Code of Conduct came into force immediately.

 

The last date for submission of nomination papers is March 30, the scrutiny will be on April 1, the last date for withdrawal was April 4 while the counting of votes will be on April 21.
