Shillong: Assam and Meghalaya have jointly committed to develop Amim Lake as a “world class” destination for water sports.
This was announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the closing ceremony of the Rising Sun Festival 2022 at Amim Lake in Meghalaya on November 5.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the two states will work together with the Indian Army to promote water sports in the Northeast.
He said that Assam and Meghalaya should take concrete steps to promote water sports in Umiam Lake in future.
The Assam Chief Minister said that the inaugural three-day Rising Sun Water Fest 2022 organized at Umiam Sports Complex in Meghalaya has taken water and adventure sports to a whole new level.
He added that the fest has provided a unified platform for various clubs and sportspersons to showcase their sporting skills.
Thanking the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, Gajraj Corps and Red Horns Division for organizing the fest, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Umi Lake, where the fest was being held, would become an attractive tourist destination.
Encouraging the support of the Meghalaya government, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the governments of the two states would work together to transform Umayam into a world-class venue for water sports with the help of the Indian Army.
He hoped that the spread of this fest would take the socio-economic and infrastructure development of the region to a different level.
