Guwahati: Assamese actor Amy Baroah has landed in legal trouble as a case has been filed against her for misrepresenting the Dimasa community in her award-winning film ‘Semkhor’.
Kemprai Mahendra , former president of All Dimasa Students Union, has filed a case against Amy Baroah.
In the FIR, Kemprai mentioned that the film misrepresented the livelihood, culture and tradition of the Semsas.
The FIR reads, “…I have strong objection to the content of this particular film ‘Semkhor’, as the story presented in the film is completely false and it portrays the livelihood, culture of the Semsas.” And the tradition is misrepresented.
Kemprai added that the film’s depiction of the killing of girls is completely wrong.
“The film also portrays the widespread practice of superstition and child marriage in the Dimasa society which is not entirely true. The most important topic that created an uproar in our Dimasa society was the killing of girl children in the film. There is depiction which is completely wrong and such a practice has never been prevalent in Dimasa society since ancient times.
“It is noteworthy that the producer/director intended to gain commercial gain and personal fame from the film and never studied the relevant subject related to the lives of Simsa in depth before finalizing the story on Simsa. Tradition, culture and livelihood and as a result the film has presented a false story of our society and has created a wrong image of our society across the world and has hurt my sentiments and morals. Generally our Dimasa people.
He urged the filmmaker to consult experts from the Dimasa community and remove objectionable scenes from the film.
