Tezpur (Assam): A hunter was shot dead while trying to escape from police custody. An alleged poacher arrested for killing a horned rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park in Assam was shot and injured while trying to escape from police custody in Biswanath district, an officer said on Monday. Told
The accused was arrested on Saturday from Juria area of neighboring Nagun district, Biswanath Superintendent of Police Naveen Singh said.
During interrogation, the accused claimed that he had bought weapons from Dimapur, Nagaland to kill the rhinoceros and extract its horns and that the weapons were hidden in Suwaguri area of Biswanath district.
A police team rushed him to the scene, but he suddenly attacked a constable and tried to flee.
Singh said police told him to stop and fired warning shots into the air, but when he did not stop running, he was shot in the leg.
The accused was earlier arrested and was out on bail at the time.
