Assam: 40 exotic animals smuggled from Myanmar seized in Rangia.

Guwahati: Assam Police on Thursday Exotic Animals Smuggled from two Delhi-registered SUVs at Rangiya in Kamrup district of lower Assam.

The Exotic animals Animals Smuggled the Mizoram-Myanmar border in two Toyota SUVs and taken to Siliguri in North Bengal via NH 31, police said.
Animals captured include wallabies, exotic chimpanzees, rare tortoises and monkeys.

“Acting on a tip-off, the Rangia police intercepted the vehicles (registration no. DL 8CAQ 9876 and DL 10CH 7924) and detained two persons after finding rare animals in cages. Both said they were from Mizoram- traveled from the Myanmar border and was going to Siliguri to deliver the consignment,” said a police official.
The official said the two persons caught with the exotic animals are being interrogated for information about others involved in the animal smuggling business.

The animals have been handed over to Assam forest officials to decide what to do with them.
Initially, the animals will be kept at the Guwahati zoo and checked for any health problems.

In early March, police seized macaques, silvery marmosets, and golden-headed tamarins  all exotic animals from the Brazilian Amazon in Golaghat district of upper Assam. These animals were smuggled from Myanmar through the Mora route of Manipur.
