ASACS: 25,703 People suffering with HIV in Assam

Guwahati: According to the Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS), there are an estimated 25,073 people suffering with HIV (PLHIV) in Assam.

It said that of the 25,073 PLHIV, 45 percent are women and three percent are children.
The HIV prevalence rate in Assam is 0.09 per cent, which is lower than the national prevalence rate of 0.21 per cent, ASACS said in a release on Thursday, citing the NACO HIV Estimates Report 2021 on the occasion of World AIDS Day. said

The total number of people living on AntiRetroviral therapy (ART) in the state is 10,765.

Kamrup (Metropolitan) district has the highest number of cases at 7,610, followed by Cachar at 5,200, Nagaon at 16,02 and Dibrugarh at 1,402.

Regarding the mode of transmission in Assam, 81.63% was through homosexual intercourse, 5.54% through HIV-infected syringes and needles, 4.76% from parent to child, 4.61% through homosexual routes, blood. Through transfer is 0.85 percent. And 2.61 is not defined, he said.

ASACS promotes HIV messages through mass media (print and electronic), outdoor media (hoardings, bus and train panelling), folk media, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), festivals, events and activities. Various activities have been started to spread awareness. and HIV awareness in colleges through Red Ribbon Clubs and schools through the Adolescence Education Program, the release said.
On the occasion of World AIDS Day, the state health department will organize a central function at Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) where Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta will launch ten Opioid Replacement Therapy (OPD-OST) for the district will start dispensing centers and Hospitals across Assam.

A rally was also flagged off by renowned swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika at the GMCH auditorium complex in which students of colleges and various institutions, NGOs and other stakeholders participated.

World AIDS Day is being celebrated in all the districts of Assam with rallies, meetings and various other activities.
