Arunachal weightlifters shine in the Indian Weightlifting Federation Championship.
Itanagar: Weightlifters from Arunachal Pradesh continue to shine in the ongoing Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth, Junior and Senior Championship-2022 as Markio Tario won a gold and silver medal for the state on Thursday, the 4th day of the competition. Won the medal
Participating in the senior 67kg weight class, Markio (18) lifted a total of 286kg (snatch: 128kg + clean and jerk: 158kg) to clinch the national title.
A resident of Tali village in Kra-Daadi district, Marquez was also crowned national weightlifting champion in the youth and junior categories in 2019.
He also won a gold medal in the under-21, 67 kg boys category at the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games 2020.
Meanwhile, the IWF Youth, Junior and Senior Championships held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha had earlier seen Arunachal’s female weightlifter Boni
Mangkhiya setting a national record by lifting a total of 171 kg in the 55 kg weight category.
Bonnie, who managed to lift the same weight in the junior category, won two gold medals in the competition.
Among the other weightlifters who have won medals for Arunachal so far in the championship are Shankar Lapping who won silver in the youth 61kg weight class by lifting a total of 248kg and Golom Tinku and Bengia Tani who won one bronze each.
More than 800 weightlifters from 30 states are taking part in the competition, which is a qualifier for the 5th edition of Khelo India Youth Games 2022, to be held later this year.
The championship ends on March 31.
