Arunachal: Dalai Lama wants to visit Tawang.

Guwahati: After his month-long visit to Ladakh, Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama has expressed his desire to visit Tawang region in Arunachal Pradesh.

“I have a deep connection with the people of the Himalayan region. I was in Ladakh recently and I hope to visit Mon Tawang again soon,” HT quoted the 87-year-old spiritual leader as saying.

He attended a prayer offered for his longevity by five Tibetan organizations at McLeodganj on Wednesday.

China is likely to object to his visit to Tawang, which lies south of the McMahon Line in Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing wants to control.

The Dalai Lama has visited Tawang seven times since 1983. His last visit was in 2017, when China accused New Delhi of engineering religious teachings in what it calls South Tibet.

Tawang, known as the land of the Mon people, is the largest Buddhist monastery in India, belonging to the Gelugpa sect of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition – affiliated with the institution of the Dalai Lama.
