Arrest of five village volunteers condemned by Manipur Congress
Imphal: The opposition Congress in Manipur has condemned the arrest of five Village Defense Volunteers (VDVs) for possessing sophisticated weapons.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president L Tilotama said the party “condemns in the strongest possible terms the police for arresting Village Defense Volunteer.”
“VDVs are playing a vital role in protecting the people of Manipur from insurgents and other criminal elements. Their arrest is a serious blow to the security of the state,” Tiluttama said.
Tilutama also alleged that the BJP-led government in Manipur was “politicizing the issue” of VDV’s arrest. He said that this is a serious matter and the government should not play with the safety of the people.
Tilutama demanded the immediate release of the arrested Village Defense Volunteer. She warned the Manipur government against any action that could further enrage the people.
Normal life affected by the shutdown in Manipur
Normal life was disrupted in Manipur on Tuesday, the first day of a 48-hour statewide bandh called by various civil society organizations demanding the unconditional release of the five VDVs.
Shops, markets and educational institutions remained closed. Public transport was also affected. The shutdown is expected to continue through Wednesday.
