Dhubri: Three persons with alleged links to Bangladesh’s banned outfit Ansar-ul-Bangla Team (ABT), an affiliate of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), were arrested in Assam’s Dhubri district during a search operation on Monday, a police officer said. told.
Superintendent of Police Aparna Natarajan told reporters here that acting on the tip-off of the earlier arrested ABT members, the police launched an operation and arrested three persons belonging to the outfit from different parts of the district.
During preliminary investigation, police found that the trio had a history of financial transactions with ABT members who were earlier arrested from Barpeta, Goalpara, Morigaon, Dhubri and other states of the country, the SP said.
Natarajan said further investigation is on and the police suspect that the arrested may have links with other active ABT members who are hiding in other states.
The SP said that among the three arrested are Shafiqul Islam, who was arrested from Bagulamari area of the town, Muzahidul Mondal from Sastarghat Part-II and Badshah Sheikh from Takimari.
The SP added that the police would register cases under various provisions of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
A mobile phone and a laptop have been seized from their possession.
The state police busted nine modules of ABT and Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and arrested 53 people last year.
