New Delhi: Expressing deep concern at the ongoing conflict in Manipur, which has affected all sections of society, Amnesty International urged the Indian authorities to work closely with civil society groups and community members of all ethnic groups. In order to ensure peace and security as soon as possible.
A press statement issued by Amnesty International on July 12 said that Amnesty International is concerned about the ongoing and unabated violence between ethnic groups in the northeastern state of Manipur. Along with this, the organization is also outraged by the inability of the Indian authorities to protect human rights in the region.
The release said that more than 100 people have been killed and many injured since the start of ethnic violence on May 3.
More than 50 thousand people have been forced to relocate. Displaced people are living in relief camps across Manipur and neighboring northeastern states. Hundreds of houses and properties were burnt, looted and vandalized.
It has terrorized and destroyed entire communities. The state government has also shut down the internet since the violence began.
The release describes the action taken by Amnesty International in relation to the current scenario, stating that survivors of ethnic violence and human rights violations in Manipur are investigating and verifying incidents. A telephonic interview was conducted with workers, workers and journalists.
Amnesty International has written to the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs by email detailing the findings of this public statement and seeking their response.
At the time of publishing this statement, no response was received from the organization.
People’s ability to access communications technology in a secure and private manner is also an essential tool for the effective functioning of human rights. Imposing such long and blanket internet shutdowns prevents important information from reaching people.
Internet shutdowns have also affected their economic, social and cultural rights, including access to essential services including medical care, the ability to conduct economic activities and financial transactions, and have adversely affected livelihoods. What is it?
Noting the dire situation in Manipur due to the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International reiterated that the Indian authorities should immediately restore internet access in Manipur.
Authorities should work meaningfully with civil society groups and community members of all ethnic groups to ensure that peace and security are restored in accordance with human rights. Victims of violence have the right to truth, accountability and justice.
Reports of police abuses and police bias require prompt, independent and impartial investigations. Indian state authorities should coordinate with each other and with indigenous groups to ensure that all displaced IDPs have access to adequate and sanitary housing, safety, clothing, clean water , nutritional and health care needs are available.
It added that the authorities should facilitate the right of IDPs to voluntarily return to their homes and rebuild their lives by ensuring safe rehabilitation and/or resettlement.
