KOHIMA: The Union government is set to sign an agreement with the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) on its demand for a separate “Frontier Nagaland” state.
This claim was made by Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah while campaigning for the Nagaland assembly elections on Tuesday (February 21).
However, Amit Shah said that the central government would sign an agreement with ENPO meeting the body’s demands only after the election process in Nagaland is over.
“MHA held discussions with ENPO, which were positive. And, after the Nagaland assembly elections are over, an agreement will be signed,” Amit Shah said during the campaign.
He added that the agreement could not be signed before the elections in Nagaland, as the election dates had been announced and the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) had come into force.
Amit Shah said the signing of the agreement between the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) and the central government “will usher in a new era of development in the region”.
“I want to tell the people of Eastern Nagaland that the solution to your problems is not far away,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah said.
Earlier, ENPO had threatened to boycott the assembly elections in Nagaland if their demands were not met, following which the MHA held talks with the organisation.
ENPO withdrew its call for a boycott of the February 27 assembly elections in Nagaland, after receiving an assurance from the Union Home Minister on February 4.
Amit Shah also said that the central government is determined to find an early solution to the decades-old Naga political issue.
“The NDPP-BJP coalition government will come back to power and then all Naga issues will be resolved,” the Union Home Minister said.
