Union Home Minister Amit Shah met a delegation of women’s civil society organizations (CSOs) in Imphal on Tuesday and assured them that there will be no separate administration on ethnic lines in Manipur. The meeting was held at Raj Bhawan in the presence of Governor Anusuiya Uikey.
A 10-member team representing various women CSOs, including Kwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham amadi Saktam Kanba Lup, Kangla Mei, AMKIL, Nupi Samaj, Porei Leimarol, and WASAP, interacted with the Union Home Minister.
The meeting is the first engagement with civil institutions after Amit Shah’s visit to the state to restore peace in Manipur.
After the meeting, Kush Shanti, President of Khauramband Nupi Keithel Sinpham Amadi Saktam Kanba Lup, addressed the media at the main gate of Raj Bhawan.
He said that Amit Shah had assured him that a separate administration would never be implemented in Manipur, allaying the apprehensions within the CSOs.
National Register of Citizens coming soon in Manipur
Amit Shah also told the delegation about the formation of a committee three months ago to use the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, Nagaland and Manipur, which shows that Manipur has NRC. RC will be implemented soon.
During the talks, Amit Shah promised to initiate dialogue with CSOs in Kangpokpi and Churachandpur. He assured that immediate steps will be taken to lift the economic blockade on NH-2 in the next two days, ensuring that there is no shortage of essential commodities and no hike in prices.
Further, Amit Shah expressed his commitment to restore peace by engaging in discussions with CSOs from both communities and announced his intention to visit the state again after 10 days.
Responding to this assurance, Apunba Manipur President Kanba Ima Lup, N Nganbi expressed cautious optimism saying that they would support the government’s efforts to restore normalcy and seek government assistance as needed. will
Women CSO leaders also raised concerns during the meeting, including the presence of a signboard in Churachandpur that reads “Welcome to Mizoram”, which they found unacceptable.
He also called for an investigation into the origins of the May 3 violence and to show the world that the crisis was not instigated by the Meetei community.
Furthermore, he emphasized that allowing the Chin-Kuki Myanmarese to settle in Manipur would be a major defeat for the Government of India and called for the issue to be addressed seriously.
The women leaders also presented a memorandum to Amit Shah through the letterhead of Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham amadi Saktam Kanba Lup, offering suggestions for restoring peace in Manipur.
The memorandum calls for early transfer of Assam Rifles personnel and deployment of new armed security forces across Manipur. He also highlighted the need for the central government to speed up the regulatory process of NRC in Manipur to address immigration issues.
The memorandum added that if the central government fails to act on the points raised within a given time and fails to communicate the reasons and consequences to the people, there will be an increase in unrest and involvement of undesirable elements. , which may potentially lead to losses.
