New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed strict action against miscreants of violence in Manipur and assured the Centre’s full support in ensuring lasting peace in the state.
An official statement said that after Shah reviewed the steps taken in the last two days to restore peace in the state with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, representatives of Meitei and Kuki communities and other stakeholders. These instructions have been given.
Shah also emphasized on dialogue with all factions and spreading the message of peace. According to the statement, he assured justice.
The statement added that the Home Minister directed strict action against the miscreants of violence and assured the Union Government’s full support and assistance to ensure lasting peace.
He assured that the government will take all measures to protect the various communities in the state.
The statement said that Shah called for expediting the relief and rehabilitation process to alleviate the suffering of the people.
Violent clashes broke out in the northeastern state on May 3 after a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was organized in 10 hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The clashes preceded tensions over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which led to a series of smaller protests.
