Assam: Security forces in Assam have claimed to intensify their efforts to restore normalcy in Upper Assam, where pockets of the United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) are allegedly carrying out their nefarious activities. Although the group enjoys little support, security forces have noted widespread defection. In a press statement, the security forces reported that a “whole of government approach” is in place and is being implemented to fully restore normalcy in the last few remaining areas of Upper Assam.
Since 2022, security forces in Upper Assam alone have arrested 107 freedom-fighters/overground workers, recovered 60 weapons, ensured the surrender of 22 freedom-fighters, and prevented the recruitment of 64 more. The security forces’ claims come amid allegations that a pro-Khalistani group, the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), is supporting the “Assam Azadi Referendum” (AIR) proposed by the ULFA-I.
ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah had recently written a letter to Sikhs for Justice, claiming that the threat to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma by the pro-Khalistan terrorist group Tunat Singh Pannu ” It’s unfortunate and misunderstanding.” Baruah also appealed to the organization not to use objectionable remarks.
The ideological construction of the ULFA has long been marginalized by the rapid development in the state, supported by a stable government, which has led to the apprehension of a large number of cadres, recovery of arms, surrender of freedom-fighters, and Its preventive recruitment.
Although ULFA-I continues its efforts to destabilize the region, efforts by the security forces to normalize the situation in Upper Assam combined with the government’s robust development programs have significantly reduced the group’s influence but has reduced.
