The Meghalaya government has imposed Section 144 with a night curfew in Tura town hours after violence broke out outside the Chief Minister’s office in Tura on July 24.
Speaking to the media, CM Sangma said, “The incident that took place in Tura outside the Chief Minister’s Secretariat is extremely unfortunate.”
“We had discussions with some NGOs who were fasting for the past few days on their demands and while the talks were going on and finally agreed to meet all the stakeholders in Shillong.
After the discussion was almost over we heard some shouting and started pelting stones from outside and asked some people to talk and control the situation, however as we approached the NGO leaders claimed that they had no idea who these people were and had never seen them before.
Further, CM Sigma asserted that the government has all the video recordings of the incident and details of the people inciting the violence and necessary action will be taken as per law.
The chief minister also announced a medical allowance of Rs 50,000 for the injured policemen in the incident.
Earlier in the evening hours of July 24, a large mob reportedly gathered outside CMO Tura and started pelting stones.
The police retaliated by firing tear gas shells to control the situation to disperse the crowd. As a result of the incidents and riots, 5 police personnel were also injured.
