Amid swine flu scare Tripura banned pigs import from other states

Agartala: The Tripura government has banned the import of pigs from other states following an increase in swine flu cases in various parts of the country.

The Tripura government’s ban on import of pigs comes as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of swine flu cases in the state.
“No pig from other states is allowed to be brought into Tripura without inspection,” said Tripura’s Animal Resource Development Department (ARDD) minister Sudangshu Das.

“Strict action will be taken against anyone found violating the order,” the Tripura minister added.
He added: “An act on prohibition will also be enacted so that the department can take action if anyone is found illegally importing pork into Tripura.”

The Tripura minister said that doctors from the ARD department are working and monitoring the situation and samples are being sent to laboratories for testing.
The Northeast region’s annual pork (pork) turnover is around Rs 8,000-10,000 crore, with Assam being the largest supplier.

Pork is the most common and popular meat consumed by both tribals and non-tribals in the Northeast region.
