Imphal: The Manipur government imposed a two-day internet blackout in seven districts of the state, effective from 5:15 PM on Saturday.
This move is aimed at quelling rising tensions and ongoing protests by civil society organizations.
A notification issued by Vineet Joshi, Chief Secretary of Manipur, detailed the affected districts: Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur.
The suspension covers various internet services, including mobile data, VSAT, broadband, and VPN. However, government offices will be exempt from the restrictions for their leased line and FTTH connections.
The Chief Secretary cited public safety and order as the primary reasons for the internet shutdown. He expressed concerns that anti-social elements might exploit social media to spread inflammatory content, potentially exacerbating the situation.
By invoking Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, the government has implemented this measure to maintain peace and stability in the state.
