Imphal: The central government has constituted a peace committee to restore peace and normalcy in the violence-hit northeastern state of Manipur.
The peace committee formed by the central government will be headed by Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey.
The peace committee also includes Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, state ministers, MPs, MLAs and leaders of various political parties.
Former Manipur bureaucrats, educationists, intellectuals and social activists will also be part of the peace committee.
The panel will hold discussions and dialogues with all stakeholders, including representatives of communities that have been at the center of the conflict.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said, “The mandate of the committee will be to facilitate the process of peace building between the various ethnic groups of the state, including peaceful negotiations and negotiations between conflicting parties/groups.”
It added: “The committee should strengthen social harmony, mutual understanding and facilitate amicable communication between different ethnic groups.”
It should be noted that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced the formation of the peace committee during his recent visit to Manipur.
Manipur has been on the boil since May 3 following clashes between two communities in the state and subsequent widespread violence.
Around 100 people have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced in the state following the clashes and subsequent violence.
It should be noted that after a short period of peace, fresh violence is being seen in Manipur.
Additionally, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered as many as six cases in connection with the mass violence in Manipur.
Additionally, the CBI has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the violence in Manipur that wreaked havoc in the state for over a month.
The SIT constituted by the CBI to probe the mass violence in Manipur will be headed by an officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG).
CBI will consist of 10 officials from the IT Bureau.
