GUWAHATI: An Assam Rifles jawan who was shot by some offenders while on patrol amid the Manipur violence on May 10, succumbed to his injuries at Kolkata’s Command Hospital on Wednesday (May 17). The incident took place last Wednesday, when a youth was injured in firing by offenders in Dolaithabi of Manipur East district. A team of Assam Rifles was patrolling the area when the incident took place.
The jawan was immediately rushed to the hospital, even as the miscreants fled the area.
As his condition worsened, the soldier was later shifted to the Army Command Hospital in Kolkata. This is the first incident in Manipur where security personnel have been targeted since the violent clashes between the Kuki tribals and the non-tribal Meitei community. Meanwhile, 128 columns of the Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed in Manipur to restore peace and maintain the deteriorating law and order situation.
Violent unrest in Manipur began on May 3 when a protest march by the Kuki tribal group led to clashes with the non-tribal Meitei community. A directive from the Manipur Home Department read: “Police communications show that there are still reports of houses being set ablaze with incidents such as fights between volunteers and youths from large communities living in the state. It is reported that social media may be widely used to spread inflammatory images, hate speech and hate video messages, which may have a serious impact on the law and order situation in the state of Manipur.
“To thwart the designs and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements and to maintain peace and communal harmony and to protect public or private property from any loss of life or property, it has become necessary that the rule of law Adequate steps should be taken to facilitate and mobilize the crowd by disseminating false information and false rumors through various social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other mobile phones and Short Message Service (SMS). An order in the public interest to prevent the spread of, agitators and protesters, who may indulge in arson and vandalism and other types of violent activities causing loss of life and damage to public and private property,” the order said.
