Amid fresh clashes, section 144 imposed in Churachandpur district
Imphal: The Manipur government has imposed Section 144 for another two months in view of fresh violence in Churachandpur district.
The decision came in response to clashes between two groups of people and sporadic incidents of violence reported on December 18 in some areas of the town, particularly in Thingkangphai village.
While it is unclear what triggered the fight on Monday, there have allegedly been differences between the tribes that make up the Kuki-Zo community over what name should be given to the mass burial site in Churachandpur. A mass burial is scheduled to take place at the site on Wednesday.
In response to the unrest, local authorities quickly imposed Section 144, which bans gatherings of four or more people to prevent further disruption and the spread of misinformation.
These measures are aimed at maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of citizens in the area.
Section 144 has been imposed from December 18 and will continue till Feb 18, 2024.Internet services have also been suspended in the district.
The extension of Section 144 underscores the government’s commitment to restoring peace and preventing any further untoward incidents.
As the district continues to grapple with the aftermath of the violence and the ongoing socio-political issues, the extended imposition of Section 144 serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between addressing community concerns and maintaining law and order.
