Amid fear 68 Meitei people flee from Mizoram to Imphal, Manipur

Imphal: A total of 68 Meitei people from Mizoram arrived at Manipur’s Imphal airport in a special flight on Sunday.
They left Aizawl and returned to their native place despite the Mizoram government assuring them of protection amid tensions following warnings/precautions issued by ex-cadres of the erstwhile underground Mizo National Front (MNF), leading to a video of two Kuki women being paraded naked by a mob recently.
Meiteis’ visit to his home on Sunday was mostly attended by government employees working in Mizoram.

A few students of Meitei also arrived in the same flight.
However, amid the current situation, a significant number of MET students are still in Mizoram.

Official reports said that more than 500 Meiteis from Mizoram have already reached various places in Manipur by road.
Additionally, there are currently a number of Meiteis trapped in various churches in Mizoram.

Meanwhile, the Manipur government has canceled the proposed schedule of airlift of Meiteis living in Mizoram from Monday (July 24) following the Mizoram government’s assurances of safety and security to the Mizoram-based Meitei community.
The Mizoram government has also appealed to them not to believe rumours.

After arriving on a special flight, NG Tomba (name changed), a civil servant working in Mizoram, told reporters at the Imphal airport that the owner of a house in Mizo that he had been renting for several years had asked him to vacate the house as soon as possible.
Out of fear, he managed to leave Mizoram by special flight.

Meiteis living in Mizoram received threats to leave Mizoram on 4 May, the next day ethnic violence broke out between Meiteis and Kukis.
