Amid Bhogali Bihu celebrations, Silsako residents staged a protest

Guwahati: Bhogali Bihu celebrations took a backseat as displaced residents of Silsako protested in Guwahati on Monday.

The difference among residents is their resentment over the state government’s initiation of evictions from the Silsako area, disrupting the usual joy of the traditional festival.
Demonstrators held placards and lit a Meiji, traditional bonfire amid protests against the eviction campaign.
As a result of the state government’s move to acquire land in and around Silsako Beel, many houses around the area have collapsed and many families have been affected as a result.

The affected inhabitants were very angry with the government’s move and they demanded compensation and rehabilitation if it is not provided they will continue to stage the protests in the future as well till their demands are met.

The protest happening during this festive period in Assam is a stark reminder that the government also needs to understand and make necessary plans regarding the displaced people who are affected by this eviction drive.
