
Along Indo-Myanmar border, 15 hectares poppy fields destroyed
Imphal: Braving incessant rains and cold weather this winter, around 200 state and central forces have cleared around 15 hectares of plantations planted on hill slopes in the Khamasam range of Ukhrul district of Manipur, bordering eastern Myanmar destroyed the illegal poppy.
A joint team of Ukhrul Police, Akharul Forest Department, 6th Manipur Rifles and 35 Assam Rifles destroyed a poppy plantation in Khamasom hill range, Ukhrul on Wednesday, the district administration of Ukhrul district in a campaign against illegal plantation.
In the drive, around 15 hectares of illegal poppy plantations along the Khamasom range were destroyed along with huts and the drive ended on Thursday.
A senior officer of the state police department said, “Around 113 additional police personnel were also deployed from Imphal during the operation which began on Tuesday and lasted for three days in the Khamasom hill range of Ukhrul district near the India-Myanmar border.
About 200 personnel were deployed in the Khamsoom mountain range and the exercise continued till Thursday.
The officer added that because of the rough terrain, the joint team faced many problems in carrying out the destruction drives but managed to complete the bounden duties as the law protectors of the country.
