Lumpi: On the occasion of the Assamese ‘Rongali Bihu’ festival, the people of Lumpi region celebrated Bihu festival for the first time in Lower Lumpi on Tuesday, with a day-long cultural program and traditional games for local children.
The people of the area named it ‘Border Ka Bihu’ as the place is located along the Assam-Meghalaya border under the Boko revenue circle of Kamrup district.
It is worth noting that the Lumpi area is popular with tourists as a hill station very close to Guwahati city (about 100 km) and sometimes makes headlines for border disputes.
Many traditional sports were organized on this occasion including long jump, high jump, blindfolded duck catching and many other traditional sports.
Bihu Committee President Mann Bahadur Thapa and Secretary Suman Srish presided over the day-long program.
Secretary Suman Srish said, “Jini Saikia in-charge of Lower Lumpi Border Outpost and Kamrup Police took the initiative to celebrate the Bihu festival.”
Kamrup District Superintendent, Hitesh Chandra Ray, Kamrup Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural) Pranab Dutta Goswami, and Boko Police Station In-charge, Phanindra Nath participated as chief guests in the Bihu function.
Hitesh Chandra Ray, SP Kamrup encouraged the youth of Lumpi region saying, “Rongali Bihu is usually for boys and girls who celebrate it by wearing traditional Assamese clothes and performing traditional Bihu dance. ”
SP Ray also encouraged the people of Lumpi region and emphasized the importance of celebrating Bihu festival every year so that future generations can continue the Assamese culture.
Later in the evening the cultural stage was inaugurated by Sumit Rabha, Executive Member, RHAC General Member Arjun Chhetri, and several other dignitaries.
In his speech, Arjun Chhetri said, “The people of Lumpi have taken a great initiative which may have been taken before. But it will make future generations aware of our culture in Assam. Lumpi belonging to the Gorkha community. Despite most people living in the territories, we have been living here since before independence, so we know how to celebrate our culture well.
Chhetri added, “Without culture and education, a tribe and its generations cannot progress. So we have to focus on celebrating our culture and education as well. By coming together to celebrate our festivals, we also address issues.” can solve and develop their community.We also thank the district administration, police, media and public for the success of the cultural program.
Sumit Rabha, executive member of RHAC, said, “For the first time, the people of Lumpi are organizing the Rongali Bihu festival, and this is a good sign for the people living in Lumpi, an Assam village on the inter-state border. Despite being in, it is a milestone for the people living in the Lumpi area who are celebrating the Bihu festival.
I am also thankful that I stood as a witness to celebrate Bihu for the first time, known as ‘Border Ka Bihu’. I thank the in-charge and police team of Lumpi border post as well as the district administration and people. Kamrup District Superintendent of Police, who came and celebrated Bihu with the Lumpi people. I hope the people of Lumpi region will continue to celebrate the Rongali Bihu festival in the days to come.
While interacting with the media, Arjun Chhetri also said that the Khasi and Garo people of Meghalaya state also participated in Bihu celebrations, and it has become a field of harmony.
The 4th Assam Police Battalion Bihu Team along with other artistes performed in the evening for the local public.
