Alleged Kuki militants injured three commandos in ambush attack

Imphal: Three special commandos of the Manipur police were injured in an ambush launched by suspected Kuki militants after the killing of sub-divisional police officer Changtham Anandkumar of Moreh police station on Tuesday, police said.
The attacks took place on Tuesday at various locations in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, bordering Myanmar in the south.
This led to a meeting of the state cabinet, which directed a joint operation to be launched in Moreh and adjoining areas to nab those responsible for the crime.
Changatham Anandkumar, a sub-divisional police officer from Moreh, was shot dead when he was supervising the preparations for the helicopter landing at the eastern ground on Tuesday.
After the murder was reported, a strong team of Manipur Police Commandos left for Mora.

However, militants ambushed the team at a place between Sinam and Bungyang villages in the same district around 3 pm.
Imphal police said three policemen were injured in the attacks and were treated at the Raj Medical Center.

As of the time of filing this report, gunfire between the police and Kuki militants continues in and around Sinam and Bungyang villages, about 70 km from Imphal.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the cold-blooded killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, OC Moreh police this morning.
The state cabinet under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister directed to launch a joint operation in Moreh and adjoining areas to nab those responsible for the crime and to continue it till the arrest of the culprits.
The Cabinet also noted that additional state troops have been detailed from Imphal for this purpose. Since then operations have started.
