Ahead of Lok Sabha polls, miscreants open fire on Cong candidate

Imphal: Gun firing by unknown miscreants and retaliatory action by security forces marked the prelude to the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign in the disputed state, There will be elections which will be held in two phases on April 19 and April 26.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra said unidentified gunmen attacked Congress candidate Alfred Kanngam Arthur during a meeting at TK Woodland Resort in Ukhrul district of Manipur on Monday afternoon.
The Congress is fielding former Ukhrul assembly constituency MLA Alfred Kan Ngam Arthur as its candidate for the Outer Manipur parliamentary constituency seat reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the upcoming elections.
Alfred narrowly escaped being shot, but his bodyguards retaliated and the match was reluctantly resumed.
Condemning the incident, K Meghachandra said many people were shocked by the firing and asked how elections can be free and fair if people are intimidated.
Appealing to the state government to enforce law and order without prejudice and not to back down on the attack on the Congress candidate, K Meghachandra also appealed to all gunmen to ensure the integrity of free and fair elections. So don’t panic and disturb the election atmosphere.
