Ahead of Lok Sabha, AASU pushes Demand for 4th BVFCL plant
Dibrugarh: Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the push to set up a fourth fertilizer plant in Assam’s Namrup gained momentum on Thursday following a demand by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).
Briefing the media, the Dibrugarh district president of AASU highlighted the challenges faced by the unnamed BVFCL, one of India’s oldest fertilizer manufacturing units, due to outdated machinery.
AASU said that despite the Central government’s promises, including assurances from Union Fertilizer Minister and Dibrugarh MP Rameswar Teli,, there has been no progress in reviving the industry.
AASU criticized BVFCL Chief Managing Director SK Singh for alleged mismanagement and demanded immediate action against him.
Although the Center approved the proposal for the fourth unit in 2018, with an estimated cost of Rs 4,500 crore, no significant progress has been made till date.
Declining production over the years has created challenges for Namrup’s existing units, particularly Namrup-3, which was set up in 1987, struggling with outdated technologies and machinery.
The once thriving BVFCL, which was established in 1969 as the only fertilizer manufacturing unit in Northeast India, is now suffering from declining production, unable to meet the country’s demand for urea.
