GUWAHATI: Assam is set to host the first series of G20 events from Thursday, a G20 delegation experienced an adventurous jeep safari in Bagori and Kohora ranges of Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site at Golaghat district.
On reaching the National Park on Wednesday morning, the delegates received a warm welcome. G-20 delegates are visiting Kaziranga ahead of the first series of events.
Before the jeep safari, the delegates visited the Kaziranga Convention Center Kohora where they were briefed about the various wildlife friendly initiatives and activities undertaken by the Kaziranga National Park authorities for wildlife conservation.
Notably, India is hosting the G20 summit for the first time after taking over the presidency from Indonesia on December 1, 2022, with the theme “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Land · One Family · One Future”.
India holds the G20 presidency from December 2022 to November 2023.
The G20 or Group of 20 is one of the world’s leading platforms for international economic cooperation. It consists of 19 countries and the European Union.
The G20 was founded in 1999 after the Asian financial crisis as a forum for finance ministers and central bank governors to discuss global economic and financial issues.
As part of the current G20 summit, four meetings will be held in Guwahati and one in Dibrugarh. The meetings will be held in Guwahati from 2 to 3 February 2023, from 6 to 8 February 2023, from 13 to 15 March 2023 and from 3 to 5 April 2023 and in Dibrugarh from 24 to 25 March 2023.
It may be noted that the first meeting of the Sustainable Finance Working Group (SFWG) will be held from February 2 here at Hotel Radisson Blu.
The two-day meeting will be attended by 94 delegates from G20 member countries, guest countries, various international organizations and central government officials.
The program agenda for the first day includes a yoga session and three SFWG sessions. The program will conclude with a river cruise, cultural program and dinner.
The program of the second day will also include a yoga session, a three-way event session, the fourth SFWG session and will conclude with a dinner for the delegates at the Brahmaputra Heritage Centre.
250 delegates will attend the inaugural session of Youth 20 on February 7 and 8 at Hotel Radisson Blu and IIT, Guwahati.
Moreover, 400 students from various educational institutes of Assam will also participate in the inaugural session of Youth 20.
This is the first of various meetings to be held across India on five Y20 themes in the run-up to the final Y20 summit in August 2023.
The Youth 20 Summit will focus on five themes – “Peace Building and Reconciliation”, “Future of the Work Industry”, “Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction”, “Youth in Democracy and Governance” and “Health Wellbeing”. and welfare and sport”.
Preparations to welcome foreign delegates to Assam have been completed with digital wall painting, themed gates, G20 country flags, LED cutouts, stands, hoardings etc. as part of branding and beautification of the capital Guwahati.
The Government of Assam has also completed sightseeing arrangements for the delegates at important places like Kaziranga National Park, Pobitura Wildlife Sanctuary, Garbhanga Reserve Forest, Brahmaputra River Island and Brahmaputra Heritage Centre.
The tour program will help promote the rich biodiversity and socio-cultural heritage in the international arena.
