Against basic rights violation massive women rally in Kangpokpi

Manipur: More than 6,000 women across Kangpokpi district participated in a massive rally and sit-in organized by the Kuki Women’s Organization for Human Rights (KWOHR) at Kangpokpi District Headquarters on Friday.
A huge rally and sit-in was organized against the serious violations of the human rights of women and children.
The rally took off from the Brig M. Thomas Ground along NH2 and proceeded to Deputy Commissioner Kangpokpi’s office where KWOHR leaders handed over a memorandum to the Prime Minister to DC Kongpokpi.
After handing over the memorandum, the protestors returned to the Brig M. Thomas ground and staged a dharna till 4 pm.
In a heart-warming moment during the sit-in, Hatnu Kipgen, a mother from Kangpokpi, donated her gold rings to help Kuki-Zo rape victims and encouraged women to come forward to help them too, with the women donating more than millions in solidarity with Kuki-Zo’s female victims.
KWOHR President Hahat Touthang said that after the Nirbhaya rape case, the Supreme Court in 2013 defined rape during communal or sectarian violence as “aggravated forms of rape” and the perpetrators would be given the death penalty.
KWOHR General Secretary Neinou strongly condemned the recent shocking video viral incident and requested the central government for immediate intervention, saying the ongoing crisis has displaced 54,488 people and killed 142 people, most of whom are Kuki Zomi tribesmen.
Manipur is facing a dire situation with the state government complicit and incompetent to deal with the situation, he said, adding that “the recent video of Kuki-Zoo women’s nude parade and rape by the Meitei mob shows how insecure we are in Manipur”.
“The violation of women’s human rights is a very urgent matter and we want justice. As the Internet slowly opens up, many stories are emerging highlighting the use of sexual violence as a weapon in this conflict.
“Therefore, we demand the setting up of a Special Investigation Team to oversee the Supreme Court so that all those involved in the May 3 atrocities are brought to justice.
“Secondly, the deployment of army men in buffer zones for our safety and security.
“Thirdly, seeing that we live in a very vulnerable state, we seek the Prime Minister’s support in establishing a separate administration for the Kuki-zo tribes under the provisions mentioned in the Constitution of India.”
