Imphal: The Central Government has on October 16, finally, announced the appointment of Justice Siddharth Mridul, a respected judge of the Delhi High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. The appointment comes after a long wait of three months following the recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium on July 6.
Manipur, which has been grappling with violent ethnic conflicts since May, has been facing an administrative vacuum since February 4 without a permanent chief justice.
This vacancy has been created after the appointment of former CJ PV Sanjay Kumar in the Supreme Court.
In the absence of a permanent appointment, Justice MV Muralidaran, the senior-most judge of the Manipur High Court, was dutifully serving as the Acting Chief Justice.
The delay in the appointment of Justice Mridul drew the attention of the Supreme Court, with concerns expressed during the hearing on September 27.
A bench headed by Justice SK Kaul expressed its concern over slow implementation of the collegium’s recommendations by the central government.
Notably, the court recognized the sensitivity of the situation in Manipur and emphasized the need for an immediate solution.
The Attorney General of India, R Venkataramani, assured the court last week that the notification of Justice Mridul”s appointment as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court would be issued without any delay.
In a related development, the Supreme Court Collegium recently recommended the transfer of Justice MV Muralidaran, who is overseeing the duties of the Acting Chief Justice of Manipur, to the Calcutta High Court.
