AFSPA imposition in Naga areas of Manipur condemn by UNC
Imphal: The United Naga Council (UNC), an apex Naga civil body, has vehemently opposed the implementation of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, despite long-standing peace and normalcy in Naga areas.
The UNC said the extension of AFSPA to Manipur, leaving 19 police stations in the Imphal Valley for another six months from October 1, is ‘arbitrary, biased and discriminatory’.
The Naga body alleged that the exemption of areas under 19 police stations in Imphal Valley, which has been mired in violence and lawlessness since May 3, 2023, is highly objectionable, in stark contrast to AFSPA coverage in peaceful Naga areas of the state.
“Since the signing of the Indo-Naga ceasefire on 1 July 1997, despite the peace and normalcy, the normal extension of strict law in the Naga areas, and also the Framework Agreement between the Government of India (GOAL)” on 3 August 2015. The NSCN (IM) shows the lack of sincerity of the Gol and Manipur government regarding the Indo-Naga peace process,” UNC said.
It added that while the whole world is witnessing the progress of high-level Indo-Naga peace talks with the return of peace and normalcy, the Naga areas have been reeling under strict AFSPA since 1958.
It said that the blatant and continued implementation of AFSPA has further undermined India’s democratic credibility and has become an obstacle to the peace process and its development in the subcontinent.
The Naga civil body urged the Government of India to immediately withdraw him from the Naga homeland and restore confidence and goodwill in the Indo-Naga peace process. 170 people have been killed and about 60,000 displaced in the current unrest in Manipur due to the ethnic crisis between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
