AASU says the unsealed India-Bangladesh border is the reason for the growing jihadi activities in the state

Dhubri: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has slammed both the Center and the state government for ‘failing’ to seal the river borders between India and Bangladesh.

The AASU has attributed the increase in the number and activities of jihadist elements in Assam to the river borders between India and Bangladesh.

AASU said the riverine borders are not only helping illegal migrants from Bangladesh to enter Assam, but also helping jihadists and other radical forces to enter the state.

AASU members expressed shock at the “completely exposed” border on the Gangadhar river in Bannachara area near Golakganj in Assam.

“We have been warning the central and Assam governments for the past 40 years about the consequences of leaving the river borders unsealed. But no one has heeded it,” AASU general secretary Shankar Jyoti Baroh said. said

He added: “And, now jihadi and other radical forces are using these exposed river borders to infiltrate into Assam from Bangladesh.”

The AASU leader further criticized the central and Assam government for ‘failing’ to seal the India-Bangladesh border even 37 years after signing the Assam Accord.

“It has been 37 years since the signing of the historic Assam Accord. One of the key provisions of the Assam Accord was the complete sealing of the India-Bangladesh border. But it is yet to be implemented,” the AASU leader said.
