Agartala: Elections come and most pundits seem to focus on the fight between parties. And in Tripura, that would mean analyzing Congress vs. BJP, CPIM vs. TIPRA Motha, etc. But one family seems to understand electoral battles better than others: no matter which party emerges on top, the family of late BJP MLA Dilip Sarkar to be in power.
The former Congress government joined the BJP led by Sudip Roy Barman from the Trinamool Congress before the 2018 assembly elections. His constituency Badharghat (on the outskirts of Agartala city) fell vacant as the five-time MLA died of age-related ailments in 2019, leaving the constituency of teacher-turned-politician Mimi Majumder. The way to be elected was paved.
But the influence of the government among the local people was so strong that Majumder could not make his place in the last four years and was eventually dropped by the BJP. The saffron party instead chose the dead MLA’s sister Minarani Sarkar, who was the elected corporator of the Agartala Municipal Corporation from Badharghat.
The allure and legacy of the government could not escape from other political parties. The Left and the Congress fielded candidates from the same family in their efforts to increase people’s emotional connection with the government. Sarkar’s elder brother Rajkumar Sarkar is contesting on a Congress ticket, while the late MLA’s nephew Partha Ranjan Sarkar is the All India Forward Bloc candidate from the constituency.
However, chances are high that either Partha Ranjan Sarkar or Rajkumar Sarkar will withdraw their nomination if the talks between the Left and the Congress are finalised. But, what does it look like now: The family has become the center of politics in the Badharghat constituency.
When contacted, Congress candidate Rajkumar Sarkar said, “There is nothing personal.” The fight is between two symbols, not individuals. The people of the area will decide whether I deserve the position or not.
Asked about the other candidates in the fray, Sarkar said, “Being the elder brother of Dilip Sarkar, who has served the people of the state for years, people respect me wholeheartedly. I think people will respect me. Will vote for me to carry on brother’s legacy.”
On the other hand, his sister and BJP rival Minarani Sarkar looked confident of winning with a huge majority. “I don’t see any rival in the field. Those who are contesting from other parties will struggle to save their savings on March 2. They will be defeated so decisively that they will never contest again in their lifetime. Will think twice.
The BJP leader, however, refused to raise any questions on the family front.
The youngest of the party’s three major candidates, Partha Ranjan Sarkar, a lawyer by profession, began his political career with the Congress and even rose to the rank of a member of the Pradesh Congress Committee. However, to everyone’s surprise, he was nominated by the All India Forward Bloc for the next election.
Speaking on the issue, he said, “This is a democracy. We have examples of 10 people contesting elections from the same family. What is wrong? People have the freedom to participate in the democratic exercise.”
At the point when inquired as to why he left Congress, he said, “We need to give the message that the seat dividing among Congress and Left parties isn’t shallow. The manner in which we are leaving seats for the Left, the Left gatherings are additionally permitting individuals from different gatherings to challenge surveys.”
Body electorate citizens who stayed faithful to Sarkar’s family are likewise now befuddled. Ajay Debnath, an inhabitant of Badharghat’s Camperbazar region said, “We could detect that Mimi Majumder will be dropped and somebody from Sarkar’s family will take over from the finish of BJP, however presently every one of the competitors are from a similar family. For quite a long time, Sarkar helped individuals of his voting demographic in however. Indeed, even after his demise, individuals recall him with deference. What’s more, the ideological groups believe that regard should be converted into votes.”
Sukanta Chowdhury, an inhabitant of the Beltali area of Badharghat likewise repeated something similar and said, “BJP has exceptionally flimsy possibilities winning the races performed previous MLA Mimi Majumder. For this reason Dilip Sarkar’s name is being hauled into the decisions to influence citizens playing the profound card.”
Come Walk 2, presently clear Sarkar’s family will celebrate. The inquiry is, which party will participate in the festivals?
